Do you know what that looks like? To me an advocate is someone who will go out of their way to help your cause or what you are trying to accomplish. What that means is you don’t even have to ask these people to put in a good word for you or ask them for a testimonial. They just walk around beating your drums without you even having to ask.
Do you know how to engage in people’s life? Are you somebody that is only reaching out to other people when it’s obvious you are only reaching out to get help from them? You might even be a little sneaky and call them up with some kind of bullshit about hey did you think about this, but what you are really trying to do is help yourself.
Do you know the value, the support of others can bring to you? When I talk about support, here is what I am talking about. I am going to tell you a little story. This morning, I got a call from somebody, and they were asking me if there was anything they could do to help me, which of course was going to help them. I really do like this person but our relationship really exists within their product. What I mean by that, is that we only really talk about what this person is trying to sell me or convince me of what I need. There is no depth to our relationship outside of their product. Do you follow me?
So, if I have no interest in what they are trying to get me to do right now, I will probably avoid them. I think you will do the same thing If your honest. We don’t want to openly reject somebody, we feel bad about it. We don’t feel good about it. What we much rather do is AVOID them because we are chicken shits.
But I stood up today and I called him back and I talked to him. Now I feel much better about myself. During our conversation, I finally told him that right now there is not much that I can do for this but I can tell you what I can do. I can help him with his cause. I can help spread the love. I can tell people why they should use him because I believe in what he has to offer. I am somebody that beats their drum.
In closing, what I would advise everybody to do with the relationships that they have, with the relationships that they cherish, make sure there is more depth than what you are selling, more depth in what you are trying to get. Think back, if this person calls me I know we are going to have to talk about this bullshit over and over and over, we don’t ever really talk anything other than what they can do to help me. Now they do want to add value, but they don’t understand sometimes I don’t want to talk about that or I don’t need to talk about this for you to stay at the top of my mind.
I want to advocate all the people out there that help me. The way I do that is by finding a way to help them get what they want. I don’t call them and use my service to help them get what they want. I want to help the Michael Burt’s, the Ronnie Martin’s, the Joey Richardson’s, the Dereck Godwin’s, and the John Jones’. I want to help these people who are very important to me and a lot of times I am going to have to help them knowing that I probably won’t get anything in return immediately.
In the relationship game, I believe you get rewarded on the back end. The more you are giving somebody up front, you may not get anything out of it immediately but I can guarantee you one thing. The more relationships you have, the more people you have out there fighting for you, sooner or later you are going to find a way to monetize this. When you monetize great relationships, there is going to be a huge multiplying effect that you could not go out and do on your own.
